World Youth Championships: July 8-12 in Bressanone, Italy
The mark listed next to each event below is what an athlete likely needs to achieve in order to place in the finals of the World Youth Championships. Each athlete’s listed IAAF mark is the best-known performance by the athlete that meets IAAF standards and was achieved between Jan. 1, 2008 and June 22, 2009.

The German duo of Lena Urbaniak, at 51-2 ¾, and Laurine Norman, at 48-1 ¾, rank No. 1 and 2 on the yearly Youth list. Margaret Satupai of Samoa is next at 48-1 ¾. In all, ten throwers have bettered 45-11 this year. The U.S. team is made up of Lacie Rasley (Shafter, Ca.) at 43-4 ¼, and Sarah Howard (Trinity Christian, Dublin, Ga.), at 42-9. Rasley has a personal best of 44-0 ½ and Howard has thrown 44-6 ¾. In 2007, it took 44-8 ¾ to make the finals. Tori Bliss (Portage, In.), the U.S. Youth leader at 48-2, did not enter the U.S. Trials.

Margaret Satupai of Samoa took the first round lead at 49-1 but the favorite Lena Urbaniak of Germany quickly move into first with a second round of 50-1 ¾ that would up being the winning toss. Yangxi Gong of China was in third after the a first-round throw of 47-9. Laurine Normann of Germany moved into third with a fourth-round throw of 47-10.75 (14.60) only to see Gong retake third with a fifth-round throw of 48-0 ¾. There were no Americans in the final.
On Wednesday, Shafter's Lacie Rasley threw 40-2 in the shot put qualification, about three feet short of what she needed to reach the finals.
