A New Era

After several years of dominant front runners like Salazar (08) and Wittenberg (09), this year is an unknown for the Generals in that there is not a clear cut front runner but there is a whole bunch of returning athletes.

Mariah had a very good track season for a freshman and should lead her teammates to a good season this fall.

Jelmini best in Western Hemisphere

First the state. Then the nation. Now the Western Hemisphere. Anna Jelmini has conquered another set of throwers.

Jelmini, a Shafter High graduate, won gold Thursday in the shot put at the Junior Pan American Games in hot and humid Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

Jelmini used her second-to-last throw of 16.37 meters (53 feet, 8.5 inches) to inch past Julie Labonte of Canada, who threw 16.29, in the shot put finals.

Jelmini's mom, Michele, spoke to her daughter and said Anna was excited.

"I let her tell me what had happened," Michele Jelmini said. "Everything always gets on text message and e-mail, so she never gets to tell anybody (she won)."

The Junior Pan Am Games are held every four years and host competitors from countries in North, South and Central America.

Jelmini, who competes in the discus today at 1 p.m. Pacific time, is a two-time CIF state champion in the shot put and discus and won the junior national championship in both events earlier this summer.

Lacie Rasley wins throwing event at the USA Track & Field Youth Championships

Anna Jelmini's not the only one around here who can throw her way into world competition.

Stockdale High's Alex Collatz and Shafter's Lacie Rasley each won a throwing event at the USA Track & Field Youth Championships this week and advance to compete at the IAAF World Youth Championships next week in Bressanone, Italy.

The events are for 16- and 17-year olds. Both Collatz and Rasley were sophomores last year.

Collatz threw 152 feet in the discus Tuesday at the USATF event in Ypsilanti, Mich., not close to her personal best of 177-0 but enough to out-distance her nearest competition by more than five feet.

Then on Wednesday, Rasley put the shot 43-9.25 to beat Sarah Howard of Dublin, Ga., by 12.25 inches. Rasley's personal best is 44-0.25.

The top two finishers in each event were up for consideration to attend the world youth games, and USATF selected Collatz and Rasley.

Shafter High's Jelmini competed in the discus in Poland last year as part of the USATF World Junior Championships team, one age group up from Youth.

Jelmini adds more national hardware

EUGENE, Ore. -- Shafter High graduate Anna Jelmini earned her second junior national championship of the weekend with a victory in the discus Saturday at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Jelmini's winning throw of 174 feet, 10 inches was well short of her national record (190-3), but it easily outdistanced Erin Pendleton and Aslynn Halvorson, who each threw 169-5.

"I threw decent today," said Jelmini, who will next compete July 31-Aug. 2 at the Pan Am Juniors in Trinidad and Tobago. "It has been a long weekend. I just did what I needed to do to go to the next meet."

Jelmini captured the junior national shot put title Friday night.

Jelmini wins shot put at USA junior nationals

EUGENE, Ore. -- Late night? College competition? No problem. Anna Jelmini is a champion again anyway.

Jelmini, a Shafter High graduate, won the junior national championship in the shot put Friday, just hours after competing in the senior discus event on Thursday night at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field.

Her best throw was 53 feet even, enough to out-distance the field by 3 feet, 7 inches. She hit that mark on her second of three attempts.

This came after Jelmini finished seventh in the discus among all U.S. competitors the night before.

"This morning I was a little groggy because I had such a late night," Jelmini said in a statement released by USATF. "But it was exciting to make the final in the women's discus, and I wanted to try and bring some of that excitement with me to the shot put."

Jelmini actually trailed after her first throw Friday, a 47-4.5 effort. But her second throw was the big one, and she followed that up with a 49-11.5 that also would have won the national title.

Jelmini competes in the junior discus championship at 9 this morning. Tonight, Taft native Billy Nelson goes for gold in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

His squad is big, young and talented and should be one of the top teams around this fall.

Jelmini makes discus final at national meet

EUGENE, Ore. -- Barely out of high school, Anna Jelmini already is competing with the nation's best.

Jelmini, a Shafter High graduate, made the final of the discus throw at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday night at Hayward Field.

Jelmini finished seventh in a field that included Olympic gold medalist Stephanie Brown-Trafton and American-record holder Suzy Powell. Jelmini's best mark was 187 feet, 9 inches, two and a half feet short of her national high school record 190-3.

Brown-Trafton won the event at 210-9, and Powell -- who previously owned the high school record -- was fifth at 197-10.

Jelmini became one of the eight women in the final with a 185-11 throw on her last qualifying attempt. She popped off the 187-9 with her second-to-last throw in the final.

She competes in the junior national championships in the shot put today and in the discus Saturday.

Jelmini tops Day 1 results Nationals

Impervious to the pressures and pratfalls, Anna Jelmini continued to perform
in a class of her own.
Jelmini, the recently graduated throws sensation from Shafter High in the Bakersfield, California
region, delivered a pair of clutch efforts to provide the biggest highlights among high schoolers
assembled for the opening day of the 2009 USATF National Championships at Hayward Field on
Thursday.

Jelmini named Gatorade's National Track and Field Female Athlete of the Year for the 2009 Season !

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (June 18, 2009) – In its third decade of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in partnership with ESPN RISE, today announced senior thrower Anna Jelmini of Shafter High School (Shafter, Calif.) as its 2008-09 Gatorade National Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year.

Of the 22 student-athletes ever to win Gatorade National Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year honors, 14 hail from the state of California. Jelmini joins Melisa Weis (1998-99, Bakersfield HS) as the only other high school girls track & field athlete from the Bakersfield area to earn Gatorade National Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year honors.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Jelmini as the nation’s best high school girls track & field athlete. A national advisory board comprised of sportswriters and sport-specific experts from around the country helped select Jelmini from more than 447,000 high school girls track & field athletes nationwide. Jelmini is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade Female High School Athlete of the Year award, to be presented at a special afternoon ceremony prior to The ESPY Awards in July.

The 5-foot-9 senior thrower broke the national prep record this spring by launching the discus 190 feet, 3 inches at the California Interscholastic Federation Central Section Sequoia Sierra Area Meet in May. The 2008 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships discus gold medalist, Jelmini also put the shot 54 feet, 4.75 inches at the CIF area meet, which ranked as the nation’s best prep performance of 2009 and the No. 2 throw all-time among American girls prep competitors at the time of her selection. She doubled in the discus and shot put events at the CIF State Track and Field Championships earlier this month, setting the state record in each apparatus (186-9 and 53-8, respectively) and becoming the first girls thrower in California history to win both events in consecutive years. The Generals finished fourth in the state as a team. A participant in last summer’s 2008 IAAF World Junior Championships in Poland, where she reached the discus event finals, Jelmini finished 19th at the 2008 USA Track & Field Olympic Team Trials last July.

Jelmini has maintained a 3.83 core-academic GPA in the classroom. An active member of the St. Francis Catholic Church community, she has volunteered locally on behalf of the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots Foundation and in association with an elementary school literacy-outreach program. Jelmini has also donated her time to an area junior high school library renovation project, as well as multiple food drives. As Shafter High’s Associated Student Body Commissioner of Girls Athletics, Jelmini has been a tireless fundraising booster for the Generals’ athletic program, which is heavily privately funded.

“For an athlete to set one national record and be within a whisper of another is unheard of in prep outdoor track and field,” said Steve Underwood, News Editor for dyestat.com. “But Anna Jelmini has done just that in the shot and discus. It's been exciting that she's captured the discus record. Her four-foot improvement in the shot, however, has really wowed the track community and set her apart as probably the greatest combo thrower ever, of either gender.”

Jelmini has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete in track and field on scholarship at Arizona State University this fall.

“Without question, Anna is deserving of recognition as the nation’s best high school girls track & field athlete based on her statistics on the field and the impact her play had on Shafter’s success,” said Gatorade Senior Vice President of Sports Marketing Jeff Urban. “But she is also a shining example to peers and aspiring young players of what a leader and a student-athlete should be. She represents everything we hope for in a Gatorade Player of the Year recipient.”

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by ESPN RISE, which works with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of accomplished, veteran prep sports journalists to determine the state winners in each sport.

Former notable Gatorade National Players of the Year include:
• Reigning 200-meter world champion Allyson Felix
• 2004 Athens Olympic Games 4-x-400-meter gold medalist Monique Henderson
• 2006 IAAF World Athlete of the Year and 400-meter American record-holder Sanya Richards
• NFL all-time leading rusher Emmitt Smith
• Softball Olympic gold medalist Cat Osterman
• Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Peyton Manning
• Kansas City Royals ace Zach Grienke
• WNBA all-time leading scorer and rebounder Lisa Leslie

Jelmini among sports legends with Gatorade honor

SHAFTER — With each name, Anna Jelmini's smile got a bit wider, the crowds' cheers a bit louder.

Kobe Bryant. Peyton Manning. Candace Parker. Alex Rodriguez. Allyson Felix. Lebron James. Cat Osterman. Emmitt Smith.

A veritable who's who of modern athletes, all winners of the Gatorade National Athlete of the Year award in their various high school sports.

Add Jelmini's name to the list.

Jelmini was publically given the 2009 girls track and field honor Thursday in the gym at Shafter High, her alma mater, in front of an adoring crowd that included her sheepish father.

"I knew this was a big deal," Rick Jelmini said afterwards. "I didn't know it was this big of a deal."

It's a big enough deal that Jelmini is now eligible for Gatorade's National Girls Athlete of the Year across all sports. She and the national winners from five other girls sports -- volleyball, cross country (Jordan Hasay from San Luis Obispo-Mission Prep), basketball, soccer and softball -- will go to Hollywood next month for ESPN's ESPY Awards, where one of them will win the overall award.

"It means a lot," Jelmini said. "There are some really fantastic athletes around the country."

Jelmini figures to have a good chance at the overall honor for the same reasons she won the track and field award. She set a national discus record at 190 feet, 3 inches last month at the Central Section Sierra/Sequoia meet in Oakhurst. The same day, she launched the shot put 54-4.75, the second-best throw ever. No other athlete is even top 10 in both disciplines.

Jelmini also became the first girl ever to win back-to-back double state championships in the throwing events June 6 at the CIF state championships in Clovis. Last year, she won the junior national title in the discus and competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials.

But she said this award ranks right up there with any of those honors.

"It's really high up there," Jelmini said. "It's so exciting to get this. To know that all these other great athletes have got this, it's so nice. I really want to become a great athlete."

As if she's not already. Shafter mayor Cathy Prout was on hand to deliver Jelmini another honor -- a proclamation declaring June 18 "Anna Jelmini Day" in the city.

This all started late last week, when Shafter throwing coach Matt Godbehere received a call about the award. As he, Gatorade, the school and the Shafter community scrambled to set up the ceremony, they kept it a secret from Jelmini until Wednesday night.

That's when her parents drove her up to Shafter's city hall for a private ceremony announcing the award.

"My mom kind of gave it away when we turned the corner and she pulled out the video camera," Jelmini said. "She was claiming to be filming this flag, and I was like, 'Yeah, right mom, if this is a surprise, that's a bad cover.'

"But I thought it was just going to be a celebration. Then (during the ceremony) I heard "national," and I was like, 'What did she just say?"

Jelmini becomes the second Kern County athlete to win any of the Gatorade awards, which started in 1985. Bakersfield High's Melisa Weis took home the track and field hardware in 1990.

And so, head spinning all the way, Jelmini will join the Kobes, LeBrons and Melisas of the world.

"It's too crazy," she said. "It's like, no, you don't really rank yourself with them, but then it's like, 'Wow, I could actually be with them,'" Jelmini said. "I mean, I get to go the ESPYs. It's so crazy."

Anna Jelmini - Discus & Shot Put

What more can you say about Jelmini? Defending state champ in the throws. National record holder in the discus and the second best shot putter ever. Dyestatcal and others think she may have had the greatest performance of all-time at her area meet where she set those records.

She is 25 feet better than the next discus thrower in California (Alex Collatz) and 7 foot better than the next best shot putter. In the fall, she will be attending Arizona State but one hopes she gets the shot record before her high school career is over.

Oh and one thing that is not said enough, is she is really nice and a great student too!Event 25 Girls Shot Put Prelims

Laci Rasley - Shot Put

Laci Rasley (Shafter So) is currently ranked number sixth in the state in the shot put and has a good shot at making the finals. She is within a few feet of most those in front her with the exception of her teammate Jelmini and has been improving throughout the season. In fact, her best this season (44'0.5) would have placed her second at the state meet in 2008
